Statement

We believe in B-art, as in B-movies. Based on a previous collaboration (Projector on a Swing), we want to create shivering gray silicone rubber pedestals for video projectors in the basement of Sculpture Center.

Antoine Catala works with video and TV streams. Using a computer, he has transformed television signals in real-time and projected it onto walls, into what look like huge spinning, multi-bubble shapes, appearing to float in the gallery space (TV Blobs). He has created videos based on digital compression errors (Couple in a Garden). The results are colorful, hallucinatory, video portraits of faces that seem to be forever melting, as if conjured from a malfunction in the viewer's central nervous system.

Dean Kenning's work focuses on the bodily transmutation of projected images, and the anthropomorphic metamorphosis of 3D artworks. For example, in a series of spasmodically jerking silicone rubber sculptures (Plants), he humorously ‘gives life' to what sits on top of the plinth. He often makes use of projections in live work, such as Sunset Over Civilisation, where an electric fan was transformed into a talking head that gives a psychedelic slide show lecture.
.

Proposal

The installation consists of two kinetic pedestals for video projectors. The proposal builds on our previous collaboration Projector on a Swing (Christine Mayer Gallery, Munich 2008) in which the video apparatus, turned to default blue screen awaiting input, is relentlessly knocked back and forth on a swing by a rubber hand attached to a fucking machine. Like a horror movie, we want to create two anthropomorphic pedestals that mimic hybrid life forms: trembling matter with stunted limb-like branches. We are proposing this work for Space C at the Sculpture Centre, i.e. the cellar, with all its fairy tale and horror movie associations.

Our pedestals will consist of cast trunks of gray silicon rubber, resembling a vaguely vegetal mass, something like a pale toadstool. A projector sits precariously on top of each trunk. An infra-bass speaker will cause the trunk to vibrate and thus wobble the projector on top. The image projected on the walls will tremble accordingly.

The basement space will be dark, the sole sources of light emanating from the projectors. Because of this doubled, intense spot-like lighting, the audience will be spatially disorientated, thus eliminating the comfortable psychological distance between themselves and the image.

A contact microphone will record the noise made by the projectors – electronic hum plus whir of the internal fan – which will then be turned into sub-audible infra-bass and fed through the speakers concealed at the base of the trunks. Although barely audible, the sound vibrations which cause the rubber pedestals to move will create a disconcerting, subliminal ambience.

As a structuralist notion, the idea is to displace visual content and treat degree zero video projections as special effects in themselves: the projectors will not show any externally received images; rather they will display the default screen when a projector is turned on (usually a blue screen with logo, and a line of text saying: ‘Please select video source'). The sculptures act as placeholders for video content, they are receptacles for any potential moving images emanating from the spectators own imagination. The ‘movie' is not the static screen images beamed by the projectors; the ‘movie' is the moving pedestal. The trembling rubber pedestals ironically address the operational role of the plinth as a stabilizer of both gravity and aesthetic value.

The set up is a closed loop, cut off from external visual/audio content, feeding off itself. Deprived of image supply the shell-like materiality of the equipment is emphasized through the crude physical animism – vouched for by the quixotic movement of static default screens. Against compliant mass media saturation, our grotesque, troglodytic assemblage is intended to transport one imaginatively to the primitive origins of shadow play phantasmagoria on cave walls.
.

Budget

We assume that the projectors will be lent by Sculpture Center or other organisation.

Silicone Rubber: $500

A decrepit ‘professor' made from a moving electric fan, delivers an apocalyptic lecture from behind a desk. His words (pre-recorded by an actor) are delivered through a speaker-mouth and into a microphone, and his (...)
2006

Performance
Performed at Foul Side of the Sun at Bar-A-Bar, London, and Itchy Park, Limehouse Town Hall, London.

The piece takes its title from art historian Sir Kenneth Clark's monumental TV series from the late 60s Civilisation. A decrepit ‘professor' made from a moving electric fan, delivers an apocalyptic lecture from behind a desk. His words (pre-recorded by an actor) are delivered through a speaker-mouth and into a microphone, and his head moves from side to side. Meanwhile I operate the slide projector, changing slides when the ‘professor' announces that I should do so, and spilling ink and acid onto the series of famous paintings and drawings projected on the screen. The usually serene, disembodied character of the lecture format, with its stage-like quality (podiums, spotlights, etc.) is estranged and rendered grotesquely physical, whilst the academic litany of old master slides transmutes into a psychedelic show.

The chemical character of the material (Styrofoam, silicone rubber) makes this a totally artificial, poisonous (non-biodegradable) or alien type of nature. The aesthetic lies for the most part in the spasmodic, jerking rhythm of the ‘plants', something which detracts or distracts from any contemplative relation with the art object. I am interested in how to bring something ‘to life' by means of the most crude ‘special effect'. The work is ‘animated' not through some ethereal emotion, but quite literally with the use of a motor – and yet despite its ridiculing of the contemplative stance it allows for imaginative engagement and encourages anthropomorphic projection.

Performance Photo, 2006

Dean Kenning: Plant

Installation Shot, Taxter and Spengemann, New York, 2009

Silicon Rubber, Motor, Styrofoam

One in a series of works of rubber kinetic sculptures with Styrofoam. The tuberous rubber forms are vaguely plant-like, but are also reminiscent of internal bodily structures such as nerves or veins. The work is ‘animated' not through some ethereal emotion, but quite literally with the use of a motor – and yet despite its ridiculing of the contemplative stance it allows for imaginative engagement and encourages anthropomorphic projection.

.

.

.

Dean Kenning: Specter

Performance Photo, 2006

Made for the performance event Illuminated Chain of Master Freedom, The Griffin, London.

The image shows my face projected onto a balloon in a pitch-black room. I had blown up the balloon, attached it to the ceiling, and then sat with my back to the audience. Facing a video camera connected to a projector, my head, under-lit, is projected above me onto the balloon; it appears and disappears as I read out a dialogue between a questioner and a ‘spectre'. The effect is of a ghostly apparition hovering above the audience.

.

.
